Lingual braces are a type of invisible braces, that are placed behind the teeth. Self-ligation braces are also known as smart braces. They use the technology of self-ligation which helps in restricting the time the braces needs to be worn. They rarely require adjustments and is made of high tech wire and innovative clips, which eliminates the need of rubber bands. This makes them easier to clean. The treatment time required for ligating braces is also very less.

These tooth coloured braces are very popular among teens as they are not instantly visible. In clear braces, the brackets are made of clear material that are less noticeable than their metal counter parts. They are smooth, small and designed to easily blend with teeth.

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry, which deals with the correction of teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly. Crooked teeth and teeth that do not fit together correctly are very hard to keep clean and are at risk of being lost early due to tooth decay and periodontal disease. Teeth that are crooked or not in the right place can also detract from one’s appearance.
The benefits of orthodontic treatment include a healthier mouth, a very pleasing appearance and teeth that are more likely to last a lifetime.

Fixed appliances include:

Braces: It is one of the most common fixed appliances. Braces consist of bands, wires and brackets. Tightening the arch wire puts tension on the teeth, gradually moving them to their proper position.
Special fixed appliances: These are mainly used in infants to control thumb sucking or tongue thrusting. This appliance is attached to the teeth with the help of bands.

Fixed space maintainers: If a milk tooth is lost prematurely, then a space maintainer is made use of to keep the space as it is until a permanent tooth erupts.

Removable appliances include:

Aligners: It is an alternate to traditional braces for adults. Serial aligners are being intensively used by increasing number of orthodontists to move teeth in the same way that fixed appliances work, only without metal wires and brackets.

Removable space maintainers: These devices serve the same function as fixed space maintainers. They’re made with an acrylic base that fits over the jaw and have plastic branches between the specific teeth to keep the space present between them open.

Palatal expander: This is a device used to widen the arch of the upper jaw. It is a plastic plate that fits over the roof of the mouth.

Removable retainers: These are worn on the roof of the mouth. These devices prevent shifting of the teeth to their previous position.
